The New Year’s Resolution You Can Stick To

Folks, we are a few weeks in 2016 already! Some of us may not be keeping up with our great goals. How many of your gym memberships are gathering dust? Well, whether or not you’ve kept to your aspirations, I am going to give you a new challenge for this year.

Choose One Fair Trade Certified Item and Stick with it All Year

It is no secret that I am a major Fair Trade supporter. I used to work for Catholic Relief Services as a Fair Trade Intern when I was a student at John Carroll University and always advocate for buying Fair Trade when possible, within your means of course. Fair Trade goods help farmers in developing countries build sustainable businesses that positively influence their communities.

I challenge you to find one product, just ONE, and commit to buying it Fair Trade for the remainder of the year. For example, you could commit to: coffee, flowers, honey, olive oil, sugar, bananas, tea, or wine. Choose a product that you love and buy regularly and commit to only buying the Fair Trade Certified version of that product. Take the time to learn about the big impact that product has on the lives of the farmers and workers who produced it.

“There is no worse material poverty … than the poverty which prevents people from earning their bread and deprives them of the dignity of work.” —Pope Francis

What can you commit to buying? If you need ideas, let me know! I’d love to help you brainstorm.

I love buying fair trade, too! There is just something so peaceful about knowing you are supporting another member of the body of Christ. Thank you for stopping by, Sarah! I am humbled you commented, because I love reading your blog 🙂

Awesome! I hope you enjoy looking through the sites. I also love the company Ten Thousand Villages. I recommend checking that one out.

One year for the Lenten season I decided to put my phone away whenever I was out to lunch or coffee with a friend. It was so helpful to be more present and less distracted. Such a great goal. Good luck!

I am big into fair trade too. We used to have a gorgeous little fair trade store in our town and I LOVE shopping there for gifts, but sadly it closed down.

I love this idea! Thank you! I am going to pick one product – coffee – and even tho it is a small step it is in the right direction. And we do drink a lot of coffee!

Now that’s a clever challenge for the new year! I’ll have to really take a look at my regular purchases and see what a likely candidate would be (probably tea, though, as it’s my main luxury good these days).

I would have never even thought of this as a NY resolution. But you’re so right, how this little change can have such a ripple effect. Thank you for setting up such an admirable challenge.

Oh my Mary! You have got me on this one! I have sat here for at least 10 minutes thinking. which by the way makes you rock to have me ponder as doctors say I have ADD. I love your writing \style
